WHY DO GOATS NEED COATS, BESIDES THE OBVIOUS?
I feel a story coming on!
I hope this has never happened to you and your herd!
I heard the dog outside barking, which immediatley sent me flying out the door. I was hoping this was just another false alarm. This time it wasn't. Goats were scattering in the pasture and on their tails were two dogs. As I went running past my husband in the barn lot I remembered I had been canning goats milk in the house. I yelled at him in passing to go turn off the stove. In male translation I guess that ment follow me to the pasture, because thats what he did. As we reached the pasture I began trying to get thirty goats into the barn as they were panicking. That wasn't going well. My husband spotted our Lamancha doe, Mary in the pond up to her neck. What he hadn't expected to see was that the dogs had swam out to her and were literally chewing her head up. LaMancha's don't have ears but, what ears she had were chewed up. The dogs got scared and one ran off. My husband was able to get a hold of the other one as it was climbing out of the pond. He then got worried about Mary and let the dog lose and it ran off also. Some how Jay (my husband) got Mary to the barn. I really wasn't sure she was going to make it. She was soaking wet, cold, in shock and PREGNANT! I dried her off the best I could and remembered I had purchased two animal coats at a yard sale. I put the large one on her! It took a good week for her to respond to us. She just stood with her head in the corner of her stall. After all the pain medication and antibiotics she still lost her babies. Do you know the owner of those dogs stopped to asked if we had seen his dogs? I explained to him what had happened. He really didn't believe us. He said the dogs wouldn't hurt them, they would just play with them. I thought I might just jerk him through his car window and thump his head a few times!! He left and we never seen him again. So we were unable to collect payment for Mary's dead kids. After Mary recovered she was rebred and delivered boer cross twins. One with ears and one without as usual. OH YA, I did remember my milk and was able to salvage it and not burn the house down! Anyway, all that just to tell you that the goat coats were a blessing to have on hand. It help bring her body heat up and was agreat comfort to her. The goat coats have since been used often and for different situation. I have made myself several more just to keep on hand!!
